2025 December the Artist as Boris Badenov

Not by intent, by deliberate fuck-up, fine metaphors abound, when I poor more liquid, whichever medium and mix of medium, I compensate for my complete lack of hand skills – there’s a reason 95% of what I do is squirting a plastic fastfood restaurant-sized ketchup bottle of some combination of gouache, acrylic ink, fountain pen ink, and clear elmers glue – by applying more liquid medium (as opposed to Liquid Liquid OR Medium Medium) than the canvas could possibly absorb and the painting, if I can call it that, dictates some of its own creation as the canvas warps in wetness and directs overflow the fuck where it wants. Youngsters, Boris was Moose and Squirrels’ arch enemy. Diane’s Kamikazi Fun Machine still uses Moose and Squirrel’s theme song for her mic-breaks

  1. This one’s an 8-knuckle punch (it took me about 7 minutes of re-clicking “leave a comment” before I got in). Sometimes i think i detect a pattern of evolving pieces that are actually (subconscious?) studies culminating in a knockout (like this)!

    1. weeding my library yesterday, I came across a book given to me by friends of my parents when I was four – r.l. stevenson’s ‘a child’s garden of verses – the time span between when it was published and when a printed copy reached me is now smaller than the time between when I got it and the time I have just found it in my basement – it has followed me for so long and over so many miles – and I am grateful, as I am grateful now to be able to admire this art and to share my appreciation of it – may more moments of love, peace, joy and wonder come to Jeff, and Steven, and those who are dear to them, and all who may read these words
